A quick question for the bloggy peeps: with my brother and his family visiting this Christmas, we have ten stockings to hang. In previous years, we’ve hung the stockings from the curtain rod – but, this past summer, the boys pulled it out of the wall and it’s simply not all that strong. We’ve also used those stick-and-remove hooks before, but I balked at the price tag; at $3.99 each, it will cost over $40 just to HANG the stockings, let alone fill them!
What do you use to hang your stockings?

- I could cry… Just got an e-mail from the woman I thought was “the one”, the ideal but expensive child care provider. She changed her mind. She doesn’t want to reduce her rates from $40/day per boy. You could try plastic outdoor light clips on the mantle – I read about it (http://momma2beans.blogspot.com/2007/11/wfmw-safe-stocking-holders.html) but haven’t tried it myself.
Plastic Zip ties along the railing on the stairwell. They stay in place because of the vertical rods.
We’ve done (in the way past when I was a kid) clothes line down the bannisters with clothes pins (you can paint them red and green if you want)
We have the nice heavy weights from Lee Valley for the mantle, but only have 4 and they’re expensive. As kids, we simply stuck them to the couch with pins (they sometimes ended up just sitting on the couch once filled). Alas, no good with a leather couch (not sure if yours is cloth?).
This has nothing to do with stockings…Ian’s Evergreen Planation ( http://www.iansevergreen.on.ca ) has a new baby reindeer named….Donder. How exciting is that. You can even visit your namesake.
Aha – Stairway!!! That may be the ticket! Thanks, all!
(off to check Colleen’s Donder link – thanks Colleen!)
Push pins when empty, Santa overfills every time and leaves them on the floor in front of the woodstove….
my m-i-l just puts our stockings all over the den – on the couchs, chairs, etc. there would be nowhere to them all (12-14 each year).
When we were kids my paprents would hang them on our doorknobs when they were full for us to open when we woke up at 4am on Christmas morning. Can’t imagine you have enough doorknobs though!
I have the same problem, so I’m checking your comments for solutions!
We’ve done the clothesline route in the past. Sounds like it’s going to be a crazy time at your house. Crazy but way too fun.
Handles of thel living room cupborads and this year we have window latches that are in the right direction so they’re perfect.
In the past, we just placed them on furniture and they somehow got filled!
Also, I have a friend who uses red rubber boots as stockings. They stand up straight on the floor.
I’m with Juls. My parents would hang them on the doorknob to keep us occupied in the early hours. It worked.
Like Valerie, we have the lovely stocking weights from Lee Valley. If you are mantle-less, try door knobs or the backs of diningroom chairs. Anything will work, really! Have fun with it.
In our house, Santa fills the stockings left at the foot of the bed – because that gives the toddler (yikes…pre-schooler) something to explore and play with a bit in her room, so that if she wakes up early from excitement, she’ll not bother us so early!
Ten stockings?@!?
I doubt this will work for you – am not sure of if you have a mantel – but perfectly balanced industrial-weight stocking holders serve our purpose well.
I got these ones a couple years ago at the Superstore. I do love them so.
We just place our stocking underneath the tree and put our names on them. No fireplace here.
