Thomas the Tank Engine is coming to Ottawa

Parents of preschoolers, consider yourself warned: Thomas the Tank Engine’s popular “Day Out With Thomas” is coming to Ottawa this summer!

Props to Nancy for sending me a note yesterday. The Day Out With Thomas extravaganza will be held on August 17 -19 and 24 – 26 at the Ottawa Central Railway’s Walkley Yard. (Never heard of it? Me neither. It’s just across from the Home Depot near South Keys.) Festivities include a half-hour ride on a train pulled by the Very Useful Engine himself, a chance to meet Sir Topham Hatt, and of course the largest Thomas memorabilia gift shop on the planet.

Tickets went on sale this morning, and I couldn’t help myself -I picked some up for the boys. They aren’t cheap at almost $20 a person, but the boys still enjoy Thomas enough that it will make for a memorable summer event.

Not nearly so memorable, of course, as our first and only previous Day Out With Thomas adventure back in the summer of 2005. We trekked eight hours across the province to St Thomas for that one – and it was truly worth it. The boys still look at the pictures and talk about the day we met the real-life Thomas the Tank Engine. (Funny for me to look at those pictures now and see that Tristan is then the same age that Simon is now. Time flies!)

  1. YAYAYAYAYAY! THANK YOU! We are sooo there!!!!
ALSO – Hi-5 will be at the NAC on June 21. Not sure if any tickets are left, though, but in my excitement I bought 5 to make sure sure sure we could go! I’m bringing my mom, Christos, a friend, and her niece. My son LOVES Hi-5… do your boys? No kidding, my son has the dances down pat!
AND – BOB THE BUILDER will be at St. Laurent Shopping Centre mid-May, on a weekend, I forget which days, and that is free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. P.S. Perhaps seeing Thomas live and in person will get my son back to loving his Thomas table and train set I bought for him this past Christmas even though hubby kept saying to me: “Well, shouldn’t we wait until he’s after 2 years old, so he will have more of an interest in it, if at all?” But of course, I couldn’t wait, and spent you know how much on the whole set and now it’s used as a table for other trucks, toys, and for Christos to sit on sometimes!

  3. P.P.S. Your link to your other Thomas post made me teary eyed and I loved the pictures capturing every moment… from his excitement to running over to Thomas to the boys asleep in the car.

  4. Thanks for the warning ;). Although it sounds fun and will be at the same time as a certain 4th birthday, I am not sure I want to lure back the Thomas into our lives. He has been banished for the time being :).

  5. Ah, yes. Thomas comes to Cleveland, OH too. We’ve been 3 times. Our oldest was a Thomas addict. Thank goodness we have a girl in between the boys. We are getting a small break. At $16 a ticket, it’s getting a bit out of our price range now though. In my opinion it’s kind of a rip off, you go forward for about 10 minutes, and then backward for about 10 minutes. And, the passanger cars don’t look like Annie and Clarabel. But the other festivities are fun for the kiddies.

  6. Day out with Thomas rocks, we saw him in Essex CT 5 years ago where we could also take a ferry boat ride. Will be repeating this fall with as our next child is going to be three!

  7. Of course I got you a ticket, Kerry. How else could I drop the kids off for the day for you to take them to A Day Out With Thomas if we didn’t get you a ticket, too? We’ll drop them off at breakfast and pick them up after dinner – the next day. ‘kay?

  8. I know a six year old who will be nearly as excited as his father to hear the news… 😉

  9. I’m beginning to wonder if I’m a decent mother. I suffered through exactly 3 episodes of Thomas the Tank Engine when Sam was about 2 before nixing it from the list. The “told ya so” cap on every story seemed to be along the lines of “nyah, nyah, LOSER!” Grumpy faced trains getting shown up by self-satisfied trains who won races with a laugh and a “you suck!” or something like that. But now I’m thinking maybe I was the tired and grumpy one back then cuz everyone seems to like the whiney/bitchy train face off. Frankly, I’d have been happier if he watched Ninja Turtles kick the crap out of each other (and I, for one, wouldn’t mind seeing the turtles take on Daniel Cook. Can’t stand that kid..). Man. I AM evil.
For the record, Sam watched Poko.

  10. YES~!!!! NATHAN IS GONNA LOVE THIS. Buying the tickets today…
Thanks you Dani and Thank you Nancy!!!!!

  11. Well, I may have mentioned it to Dani cause I know her boys love Thomas…but my guys aren’t interested in him at all. I do know they would love the train ride though. Maybe I should???
Hi-5…now THAT’S where I would spend the money!!

  12. OH MY GOD. I’m getting excited just thinking about going with the boys. They’ll LOVE it. I have tears in my eyes thinking about how happy they’ll be. *snif*
THANK YOU for the heads up. 😀

  13. I bought Thomas tickets and looked at the Hi-5 tickets. My younger two would absolutely love to go but for just the three of us (mom and two kids) it was $160. Are they on crack???

  14. We owned almost every tank engine made, until they started coming out with new characters a couple of years ago. We took our kids to St. Thomas almost 2 years ago at the height of my son’s fixation with Thomas. It was a blast, my daughter who was about 8 months old at the time loved the train ride.
The longevity of the obsession amazes me though. He’s loved the trains since about 14 months of age -he’s just turned 7 and will still put on the occasional video.
    To everyone who’s going, enjoy!

  15. could somebody please tell me where to go to get tickets for thomas in ottawa. My nephew loves Thomas and I would pay any amount of money for him to see Thomas.Ican’t wait to see his little eyes light up when he sees Thomas.
