Sesame Street

in Life, the Universe and Everything

As seen first at Phantom Scribbler’s place and soon thereafter throughout the Interwebs:

You Are Elmo

Sweet and innocent, you expect everyone to adore you. And they usually do!

You are usually feeling: Talkative. You’ve got tons of stories to tell. And when you aren’t talking, you’re laughing.

You are famous for: Being popular, though no one knows why. Middle aged women especially like you.

How you live your life: With an open heart. “Elmo loves you!”

Feh. Elmo? To be frank, Elmo annoys the shit out of me. I’d rather be Bert, or Oscar. Maybe Maria. Even Mr Snuffleupagus would be better than Elmo. Heck, anyone from the 1970s Sesame Street would be fine.

We are loving our vintage Sesame Street these days. I’ve said before that my mother is convinced I graduated magna cum laude from university because I watched two hours of Sesame Street every day when I was six years old, and I’ve always had a soft spot for it.

It was Andrea who got me looking on YouTube for vintage SS clips. We started here (still my number one favourite), and worked our way through the Ladybug’s Picnic, the Pinball counter, the King of Eight, and this classic with the aliens and the ringing telephone. Simon and I have spent many quality hours with the laptop perched between us, watching these gorgeous old clips.

For Christmas, Beloved bought me the Sesame Street Old School DVD set, and it quickly became a family favourite. Maybe it’s the comparison with some of the drivel that’s on TV now, maybe it’s the rose-coloured glasses of nostalgia, but holy crap are those old episodes ever good. I may have to stick a fork in my eye rather than endure another hour of Tom and Jerry or Scooby Doo, two other old skool favourites the boys have recently taken a shine to, but I could watch those old Sesame Street clips for hours and hours. I only wish there were more of the old episodes available.

And speaking of pirated clips of childhood joy on YouTube, if you’re of a certain age and a certain geeky disposition, this clip of Luke Skywalker, C3P0, R2D2 and Chewbacca on Pigs In Space is worth watching at least once!

Suddenly it’s 1977 all over again. (Yikes – that was THIRTY years ago. Man, I’m old.)

Taking a stand on Sesame Street I’ve written before about my love for the original, unadulterated Sesame Street of my childhood, and how Simon and I have spent hours enjoying the old clips – first on YouTube and then on our Sesame Street Old School DVD collection. Thank you for that link!
I had no idea that they were releasing Classic Old-School pre-Elmo Street, from back when Grover was The Man.
Off to add it to my Amazon wishlist….

My husband and I agree – nothing is better then Sesame Street! Christos watches Play With Me Sesame sometimes, and they have old clips on there, too, and we laugh at some of jokes that are clearly meant for the older crowd, like us! It’s a classic, for sure. By the way, I did the test, and I got Cookie Monster.

I think I may have to track down that dvd, because I really enjoyed checking out the vintage SS on youtube.
I got Cookie Monster.
Misunderstood as a primal monster, you’re a true hedonist with a huge sweet tooth.
You are usually feeling: Hungry. Cookies are preferred, but you’ll eat anything if cookies aren’t around.
You are famous for: Your slightly crazy eyes and usual way of speaking
How you life your life: In the moment. “Me want COOKIE!”

Which is frightening apt as my entire mat leave has involved a continuous stream of cookies… every day.

I’m not sure what it is about Tom and Jerry and Scooby Doo, but Abby’s been all over them these days as well.
I’ll have to pick up that dvd too, you know, for the kids. Ladybug picnic, one of my faves. I sing that song all the time.

It seems to me that many newer shows are all about “eat your broccoli” and “do exercises”. Geared toward the socalled obesity epidemic.
Why does Elmo have to have such a squeeky voice? Why do Dora and Diego sound so incredibly irritating? Luckily at our house, none are watched. Yet. He likes Thomas, and Mighty Machines. I can handle those too…
I LOVE the old Sesame Street! Never occurred to me to check via internet to see some decent clips.
Cheers!

CL – my boy loves Mighty Machines, too, and thankfully, is not into Dora or Diego (yet). He also likes Thomas and has the table and trains too that he plays with. We also watch Blue’s Clues – great show, I think – and Hi-5 – love that! We even have their soundtrack in the car and my baby dances and sings with it, it’s a saviour in the car!
Remember when they made Cookie Monster say things like: “A cookie is a sometimes food”… what is up with that!
P.S. Not sure who here gets Treehouse, but if you do, Play With Me Sesame is on everyday at 7:30 a.m. and has lots of clips from old school Sesame Street!

I’m Bert:
Extremely serious and a little eccentric, people find you loveable – even if you don’t love them!
You are usually feeling: Logical – you rarely let your emotions rule you
You are famous for: Being smart, a total neat freak, and maybe just a little evil
How you life your life: With passion, even if your odd passions (like bottle caps and pigeons) are baffling to others

I got Bert. Must be reading too many books!
Thanks for the SS links, and especially for the Pigs in Space one – a true classic! Very silly.
Last year a DVD set came out with the entire first season of the Muppet Show on 4 discs – 24 episodes of about 25 minutes each. It’s been tons of fun for us to watch with our kids. Six year olds love the humour, and the song and dance numbers. Ours like to sing some of the songs, like Mahna Mahna, and repeat some of the sketches like the Swedish Chef. Highly recommended.
