Re: Messing with my head

Dear Universe,

Thank you for an exciting first week of September. Sending my eldest son off to meet his kindergarten teacher for the first time would have been more than enough excitement for a single week, and yet you were kind enough to add the pregnancy adventure to that.

You could have stopped there. Really, that would be more than enough to keep a girl awake nights, pondering mini-vans and bedroom arrangements and parenting three children under six.

And yet, you didn’t quite thing that was enough. You decided to mess with my head just a little bit more. I think maybe you are playing a cosmic game of “let’s see how far she bends before she snaps” and you’re about to win.

Yes, I’m talking about the blood test results. The blood test results that, at 3491, seem inordinately high for me to be just five weeks pregnant. Yes, I realize that a high beta number is an indicator of a good, strong pregnancy, and for that I am extremely grateful.

But there’s that other thing. That thing about how a high beta can also mean multiples. And you know that my father was a twin, his father was a twin, and my mother’s father was a twin.

The clinic won’t be doing an ultrasound for another two weeks, which leaves me to stew in my own speculative juices for what seems like an eternity. Because universe, I really think it’s a bit twisted if you find the idea of twins is funny.

Anxiously,
DaniGirl

So… four. It’s doable. I’ve seen it done. My son’s best friend is the eldest of four children and the last two were surprise twins!
You’re doing it again.. pins and needles!

My brother has four, the last two twins. Of course the first two are teenagers.
It’s funny when I told Tiff she said to me she felt you might have twins. :)
This is going to be a fun two weeks.

Double your pleasure, double your fun!
Seriously, just take one thing at a time (easy for me to say, I’m not the one that has to wait two full weeks to find out the results of a major life impact). Just try not to stress TOO much. ;)

I guess the good news is, you’ll be getting that early ultrasound.
Don’t worry, twins run in my family too (both of my mom’s parents were fraternal twins), so if I ever get ku I’ll be panicking about the same thing and you can get me back then.

That is so exciting. I think there has been a lot of traffic Chez Mothership because I’ve been having trouble posting to your blog. Obviously no one from your workplace has been here. It must be the rest of Canada.

I didn’t realize how much twins ran in your family, Dani. Cool! I bet your parents would be thrilled for you to carry on the tradition? ;-)

35 TechetteMom September 6, 2006 at 6:46 pm

Wow, you’ve got a ton going on to say the least! I can ease one part of your worries a little at least – multiples by genetics do NOT run on the paternal side – they MUST run on the maternal side. So, unless there are some twins on your Mom’s side of the family, you have no increased risk of having twins. Also, identical twins are not the kind that are genetically determined. Only fraternal, because the tendency for a woman to release more than one egg in a cycle is the genetic factor. If there is one egg, it doesn’t matter how many sperm are in there or what type, there is only one baby (unless it splits but again that is fluke not genetics).
Hope that helps!

Two weeks? No problem. Here are some things you can do to keep yourself occupied:
1) googling “hcg levels twins” “hcg blood test chart” and “twins hcg 5 weeks pregnant” over and over
2) reading various twins-related blogs and message boards
3) making up a list of all the things you would need to buy in twos
See? Problem solved.
(I hope it is a short 2 weeks.)

As for the numbers, I was thinking right along the lines of Beachmama: could it be Frostie in there? I know you got AF but she’s been known to show up when she shouldn’t. You never had a beta after taht or POAS, right?
of dani, another 2WW for you (and us)!
