Technology, baby!

We were at my parents’ house on the weekend. Tristan was sitting in Granny’s lap and she was reading him a book. Simon was elsewhere, and made some sort of appealing noise that attracted Tristan’s attention. He hopped down from Granny’s lap, on his way to investigate what Simon was up to, and Granny protested.

Granny: Where are you going, Tristan? We’re in the middle of a book.

Tristan: I’ll be right back, Granny. Just pause the book.

It’s my birthday next week, and my family has been asking me what I would like. I have absolutely no idea. Well, there is one thing I would especially like, but no amount of money will alter nature’s plan for that.

Beloved suggested my family combine forces to get me a 1G iPod Nano, and I’m seriously considering it. As you may remember, Beloved and the boys got me a generic brand MP3 player for Mother’s Day last year. I agonized for months on what music to load, and then it took me an embarrassingly long time to get around to actually put the music on the MP3 player, which was in and of itself an entirely frustrating experience. Despite carefully crafted sets and links between song groups, the laptop and MP3 player conspired to jumble the playlist, but the player itself doesn’t have a scramble feature. And then when I used it at the gym, my primary reason for wanting one in the first place, I found the volume wouldn’t crank loud enough to motivate me.

Will an iPod solve any of these problems? Probably not. But I want one anyway. I’m embarrassed about what this says about my not-so-latent consumeristic streak.

Do you have an iPod? Which one, and would you recommend it? If not an iPod, what else do I need for my birthday?

  1. Hi, I’ve ben reading a while and you’re in my thoughts… But I’m a music geek so I had to respond. I have a Creative Zen and love it to tiny little pieces; it has a shuffle function that mine is constantly on and they come in a myriad of colours – mine is pink ๐Ÿ™‚ Have a great birthday, anyway ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. I have an iPod mini–it’s fabulous, I love it. And they’re not horribly expensive, either, definitely appropriate birthday material. The volume should not be a problem. I generally keep it on the lowest or pretty near to the lowest setting, and it is still plenty loud.

  5. Get it. And then get the thingy (like a docking statoin) where you plunk it in and the sound is better than any steroe I have ever owned.
But we don’t have one, friends do, and both DH and i have MP3 players and now all he talks about is getting an iPod.
    So there.
Personally, I am hoping you get something else for your birthday, with 2 little stripes, and it isn’t a turtleneck.

  7. No Ipod here, although all Miranda’s friends have one and they love them. She has an MP3 player.
    Get it…just because.
    Hugs

  9. I had an mp3 player and recently got an iPod Mini (for my birthday). I love it. So much more than the crappy mp3 player. And it plays really loud.

  11. Creative Micro Zen all the way. Too much hype over the I-pod. I love it. I take it biking, walking, to the cottage, grocery shopping even wear it sometimes while making meals – when I just can’t take one more screaming child.

  15. I got a 1 gig iPod nano, a while ago, and am quite happy with it. My husband got a Creative Zen Micro right after that, and he’s happy with it as well.
The only problem I’ve had with my nano is that while the earbud fits perfectly in my right ear, it tends to pop out of the left one. Minor annoyance, easily solved by different headphones.

  17. I have the 1G iPod Nano and I LOVE it. I had my doubts initially because of the hype around all things iPod, but I’m glad I have it.

  19. Thanks, all, for your thoughts and recommendations. I checked out the Zen Micro on the Creative website, but I have to admit, there is something about brand-conscious consumerism involved in my desire for an iPod. It’s the same part of me who was so painfully desperate for Kettle Creek pants in Grade Nine and Roadrunner jeans in Grade Seven.
Stay tuned for the likely humourous if not slightly embarrassing tale of trying to make it work and load it with music…

  21. I asked for an iPod for Christmas from the in-laws, hoping for a small Nano (given their usual budget, this was not out of line) and was hugely and wondefully surprised to recieve one of the new iPods with Video.
I love it. and yeah, it is brand-conscious consumerism, but since I have a Mac, it also is sticking within my usual brand.
It may be materialism, but you know, taking pleasure in an object that is well-designed and brings one pleasure isn’t the worst thing one could do ๐Ÿ™‚

  23. i went all out and got the 30GB iPod video about a month ago and i LOVE IT SOOOOO MUCH. I also have a 1GB shuffle, which is great for the gym – I loaded it up with all my uptempo workout songs and it just happily shuffles away as I go. However, for me, 1GB is not enough for regular use…hence the video beasty.
