A love letter to Mark’s

Dear Mark’s (formerly known as Work Wearhouse),

You couldn’t have known when you invited me and a handful of other bloggers and journalists for an amazing makeover day just how badly I needed the break. In fact, my schedule lately has been so insane that I first missed the deadline to reply to your offer, then almost canceled, and then begged at the last minute for you to reschedule me to an earlier time slot so I could run home after my makeover to clean the house for back-to-back showings of the House That Will Not Sell. (Because maybe my bad hair was the reason the house was not selling?) And when I had asked if I could bring a friend, you graciously said yes, and then I had to cancel that when the friend I had in mind was my only available child care for the day. (Editorial aside: Thanks, Mom, I really owe you one for that.)

All that to say, I was rather stressed when I arrived at my appointed time, sandwiching my makeover between a twice-previously-canceled dental hygiene appointment and a date with a vacuum cleaner, and I was breathlessly flustered with no idea what to expect.

I had a chance to chat with one of your managers from Toronto, who took me on a quick tour of the store. Since my background is in corporate communications, I was interested in what she said about the the rebranding exercise that the company has recently undertaken, from Mark’s Work Wearhouse to Mark’s: Clothes That Work. Wow, have you ever updated your look and your product lines! I admit, I’ve always thought of Mark’s Work Wearhouse as a place to get basics like plain Ts, khaki pants and winter gear . But you’ve really reinvented your women’s fashion lines and I’m curious to try some of your innovations like Perfectly Pressed shirts (no ironing!) and the 50-Wash t-shirts.

She convinced me to try on a T-Max winter coat and step into your winter-simulation chamber to see whether it would hold up to a real Ottawa winter with -40C wind-chill, and I was highly impressed with both the simulation and the warmth of the coat. I was also reminded why I don’t wear high-heeled sandals and capri pants in the typical Ottawa winter — the coat I tried on needed a footie compartment for my poor frozen toes! 😉

So that was cool (well, actually, that was friggin’ freezing, except for the parts that stayed nice and toasty under the coat!) but the attention from your makeover staff was amazing. I ran into my bloggy friends Lara and Andrea while I had my hair and makeup professionally done, and had a great time admiring their new looks. I love love love what your stylists did for me — they totally understood me when I said I preferred a simple and straightforward look, but would like to add an extra touch of style.

And then I was placed in the competent hands my own personal stylist. Did you read all those blog posts I wrote lamenting my need for my own personal Clinton and Stacy? Yeah. Really? Thank you! He picked out a stunning outfit from me, and I couldn’t help but look at your new Ispiri fashion line and think, “Wow, this is so not what I expected to see here.” Now, I won’t even attempt to pretend that I know one thing about fashion, but as the old saying goes, I know what I like and I liked your Ispiri line. Sharp, colourful and — be still my heart! — comfortable clothes that look as good on me as they do on the hanger.

See????

Lookit me, I'm a fashion model! (2 of 3)

Don’t I look awesome in your most excellent Ispiri leather bomber? OMG, I can’t tell you how long I have coveted something like this — and it’s a perfect match with that adorable Ispiri little black blouse.

But when you add on the Denver Hayes modern-fit black dress pants (seriously, who knew Denver Hayes pants could look so glam?) and these to-die-for kicky little ankle boots, also by Denver Hayes, that are so comfortable and so awesome that I will wear them every single day, even with my shorts if summer ever comes back even though they are fully winterized and even salt resistant? *squeeeee!*

MarksAfternoonFinal025

I still can’t believe that’s me in that picture. Me, whose fashion signature runs to unflattering striped turtlenecks, in a FASHION SHOOT! And looking, in my very humble opinion, AWESOME!

So really, thank you, friends at Mark’s. And thanks to Rayanne and Andrea of Highroad Communications, who demonstrated an excellent understanding of how to manage a successful social media campaign, and perhaps more importantly, how to wrangle one distracted but eternally grateful blogger out of her insane life for a couple of perfect hours.

Now, could we please arrange to have your makeup artist, hair stylist and personal shopper show up at my house every morning at around 6:10? Because this is a lifestyle to which I would like to become accustomed, please. 🙂

Gratefully,
DaniGirl

In which she joins the iPhone generation (plus! A giveaway!)

For my birthday this year, Beloved and the boys got me an iPhone. Yay! Like so many people I quizzed in my six-month long quest for info on iPhones, I found that although I wasn’t quite sure why I needed it when I set out, as soon as I had it I found it indispensable. I use it as a camera, for on-the-go connection to the Interwebs, to find the nearest Tim Hortons, as a GPS when we are traveling and, hmmm, what else? Oh yes, a phone!

When I first signed up to be a part of Mom Central’s My Living Stories blog tour, I only had the iTouch and wasn’t sure if we’d be getting an iPhone or not. And to be totally honest, once I had the iPhone I wasn’t sure if I wanted the boys rubbing their grubby little fingers all over it! But I was interested in the idea of apps for kids, so I signed up, thinking if nothing else I’d try them out on the iTouch.

And I liked the idea behind My Living Stories. They’re classic stories turned into an animated storybook application for preschoolers. In their own words,

The My Living Stories apps combine beautiful artwork, narration and interactive features in an easy to use platform that is perfect for preschoolers to read along all on their own, without any help. My Living Stories are a great solution for entertaining on-the-go or as an aid for teaching children to read at home. The apps allow for your child to read along with English or French narration or read the stories themselves. Interactive sounds and animation bring stories to life. Another great feature is the ability to record your own voice to go along with the story (this feature requires an iPhone or iPod Touch with microphone capabilities).

I’d downloaded the Princess & the Pea, King Midas, and The Tortoise & the Hare, but hadn’t yet had a chance to show them to to the boys. Then we went out for dinner to Lone Star with my folks (on my birthday, in fact!) and Lucas informed me about 90 seconds after we’d placed our order with no room for negotiation, “Me all done!” And I’d completely forgotten my restaurant distraction bag of tricks (playdough, crayons, books, dinky cars) at home. And then I remembered the iPhone.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to Decode Entertainment (the makers of My Living Stories apps). Not only was Lucas captivated, but the big boys crowded around and all three of them were engaged through all three of the storybook apps. And we managed to eat, pay the bill and escape with neither the toddler nor the birthday girl melting down. Success!

To be completely honest, I still have to poke around with the apps to figure out a few things — mostly because the iPhone itself it still so new to me. I had to read the story myself, but you are supposed to be able to hear the story being read. And, even more cool, you can record your own voice reading the story.

And now, the giveaway! Mom Central is sponsoring the My Living Stories blog tour, and is providing a $25 iTunes gift card to share with one of you. Yay for freebies!!

If you’d like to be entered in the contest, please leave a comment below and tell me which of the My Living Stories apps you would choose or suggest your favourite kid-friendly app. (Note: you seem to need to open the link to the apps through iTunes. I searched and searched, but this was the only way I could figure out how to link to it!)

Here’s the details:

1. This giveaway is for one $25 iTunes gift card.

2. You must be a Canadian resident to win.

3. I’m not the only blogger running this promotion, and you may enter the contest on multiple blogs; however, you are only eligible to win one iTunes gift card as part of the My Living Stories contest.

4. To enter, leave a comment below telling me which of the five My Living Stories apps most appeals to you. Or, suggest a kid-friendly app that you recommend.

5. A winner will be chosen using Random.org based on all eligible entries.

6. Contest closes at noon on Friday 6 August 2010. The winner will be contacted via e-mail within 24 hours.

7. You must be willing to share your contact information with Mom Central Canada to collect your prize.

Disclosure: I am participating in the My Living Stories program by Mom Central on behalf of Decode Entertainment. I received three free apps and a gift card for my participation. As you know, the opinions expressed on this blog are entirely my own.

Saving the best for last: Photography Q&A at Canadian Family

I was a little stumped as to how to wrap up my week of guest posts over at the Family Jewels blog on Canadian Family’s site. I’d managed on each of the previous four posts to stay more or less on theme with a particular facet of photography, but had so much left to say that I was overwhelmed as to how to sum it all up coherently. Then, inspiration struck.

You had been feeding me some excellent questions and ideas throughout the week, so I turned to the comment box and found my Muse. Thanks to Joy, Melissa, Shannon, Dawn and Carrie for your excellent questions, which I addressed in my final guest post at Canadian Family, called Photography Q&A.

Phew, that was a lot of work, but a lot of fun too! I had started a Family Photographer category here last year, but it kind of petered out on me. Obviously, I need to take Rebecca’s suggestion and pick up the thread again here. 🙂

And now for the freebies — everybody loves the freebies, right? Congratulations to today’s winner of a one-year subscription to Canadian Family magazine: Johanne!

I really enjoyed reading all of your comments about which photos you love and why. Photography is so personal, and whenever I’m invited into someone’s personal space (office, home, even blog or social media account) I’m always fascinated by which pictures they prominently feature. Thank you for that, and for your support and encouragement throughout the Family Photographer series.

Finally, here’s the last subscription giveaway. If you have already entered your name for the giveaway this week, you’re already entered for today’s draw. If you entered four times, you’ve already got four ballots. You can get one more by leaving a comment either here or on today’s post on the Family Jewels blog (or two if you do both!). You can comment on any topic you choose — offer some constructive criticism, give me some feedback for the next post on Family Photography (cuz you know there’s going to be more now!), tell me what you had for lunch, or just leave a little happy face. It’s up to you!

One last time, here’s the fine print:

  1. Today’s giveaway is for one one-year subscription to Canadian Family magazine.
  2. To enter, leave a comment on this post.
  3. To earn a second entry, leave a comment on the Photography Q&A post on the Family Jewels blog.
  4. Any previous entries you have submitted for giveaways this week will also count as additional entries into today’s giveaway. Previous winners are not eligible.
  5. I may need to take off my socks and shoes to tally up all the ballots for this draw.
  6. Entries must be received by 8 pm on Saturday 17 July 2010.
  7. Winners will be chosen using the random number generator at random.org from eligible entries on Sunday 18 July 2010.
  8. You must leave a valid e-mail address and allow me to share your contact information with Canadian Family magazine to arrange for the subscription delivery.
  9. The winner will be contacted via e-mail and posted here.

Thank you to Megan and the staff at Canadian Family, and thank you to all of you. This has been a busy but fun week, and I’m all charged up and heading off into three weeks of vacation (yay!!!) ready to take a million pictures and spam you with every one of them!

Breaking news: *Another* guest post and *another* Canadian Family giveaway!

I really like today’s guest post over at Canadian Family’s Family Jewels blog. It’s more relaxed and less technical than my “elements of composition” posts and has tips and tricks on practical things like how to get a good group picture at a family gathering and how to get your kids to smile without looking like they just swallowed a cold chicken gizzard.

You know what else I like? Giving stuff away! Congratulations to Krista, yesterday’s winner of the Canadian Family magazine subscription. Yay!

I still have two subscriptions to give away, one for today and one for tomorrow. Tomorrow, I’m going to re-enter everyone who has been eligible for the giveaways so far this week, so you’ve still got a fresh chance even if you didn’t win so far!

If you would like an entry into today’s draw for a subscription to Canadian Family, leave me a comment describing a photograph that’s meaningful to you and why. Did you take it? Is it of you or someone you know? Why is it meaningful? I think this is important because we can get really wrapped up in details like white balance and saturation and megapixels and forget the real reason we value photographs — because of how they make us feel and because they help us capture a fleeting moment in time.

Once again, here’s the fine print:

  1. Today’s giveaway is for one one-year subscription to Canadian Family magazine.
  2. To enter, leave a comment on this post describing a photograph that is meaningful to you.
  3. Entries must be received by 3 pm on Friday 16 July 2010.
  4. Winners will be chosen using the random number generator at random.org from eligible entries on Thursday 16 July 2010.
  5. You must leave a valid e-mail address and allow me to share your contact information with Canadian Family magazine to arrange for the subscription delivery.
  6. The winner will be contacted via e-mail and posted here.

I’m looking forward to reading your answers to this one! (And, now I know why I don’t have more than one blog. As much fun as this has been, getting two blog posts out every day has been a bit of a challenge!!)

Wheeee! Another winner, another guest post and another Canadian Family subscription to give away!

It’s day three of my week of guest posts at Canadian Family, and today I put up the most technical post of my Family Photographer series over on the Family Jewels blog: 10 key elements of composition.

And yay, we have another winner of a subscription to Canadian Family magazine! Congratulations to AnnBac9!

Would you like to win a subscription to Canadian Family magazine? Here’s the deal for today. Click over to my guest post on Canadian Family, then leave me a comment below naming one of the ten elements of composition that I described. (Ha! Found a way to make you read them! *wink*) And!! Get a bonus entry if you leave a comment of any sort (even “Hi, DaniGirl sent me!”) on my post on the Family Jewels blog.

Here’s the fine print:

  1. Today’s giveaway is for one one-year subscription to Canadian Family magazine.
  2. To enter, visit my guest blog post on the Family Jewels blog, then come back here and leave a comment naming one of the ten elements of composition I described.
  3. Earn a bonus entry by leaving a comment on the Family Jewels blog post itself!
  4. Entries must be received by 3 pm on Thursday 15 July 2010.
  5. Winners will be chosen using the random number generator at random.org from eligible entries on Thursday 15 July 2010.
  6. You must leave a valid e-mail address and allow me to share your contact information with Canadian Family magazine to arrange for the subscription delivery.
  7. The winner will be contacted via e-mail and posted here.

Thanks again to everyone who is playing along, and especially to the great peeps at Canadian Family!

Another guest post at Canadian Family, and another subscription to give away!

Congratulations to Judy of Mother, Wife and More who won the first of five subscriptions to Canadian Family magazine that I have to give away this week. I really love what she wrote in her comment, too:

The best tip anyone can get for photography is to remember not every photo will turn out, and not to get discouraged. Best thing my husband first taught me. Find something you like in each photo and learn to fine tune it. With kids it is guaranteed each photo won’t turn out!

So true! In fact, I’d say more than half of the pictures I take don’t turn out like I expected, and only a small percentage of those are worth sharing. The other thing I’d add to Judy’s thought, though, is to not be too quick to delete a photo. Sometimes the outtakes are as much fun as the keepers!

I’ve got another post up on Family Jewels, the Canadian Family magazine blog. Today’s subject is composition, filled with ideas on how to go from “taking” a photography (by simply clicking the shutter as soon as you put the camera to your eye) to *making* a photograph that tells its own story.

And I’ve still got four subscriptions to Canadian Family left to give away! I’m going to shake things up — to enter the draw for today, you’ll have to share this post on Twitter, Facebook, your own blog, or some other social networking site.

Here’s the fine print:

  1. Today’s giveaway is for one one-year subscription to Canadian Family magazine.
  2. To enter, tweet a link to this blog post or link to it on Facebook or promote it on your own blog or some other social networking site before noon EDT on Wednesday July 14. IMPORTANT: You’ll have to come back and leave a comment to let me know you did.
  3. Winners will be chosen using the random number generator at random.org from eligible entries on Wednesday 14 July 2010.
  4. You must leave a valid e-mail address and allow me to share your contact information with Canadian Family magazine to arrange for the subscription delivery.
  5. The winner will be contacted via e-mail and posted here.

Thanks, and be sure to come back tomorrow for more photo and freebie goodness!

Guest blogging and a Canadian Family giveaway

I am so excited!

First of all, I am excited because I have a guest blog post up at Canadian Family magazine’s Family Jewels blog today. I’m going to be blogging there all week! I’m writing a series called “The Family Photographer” with tips, tricks and thoughts about how to improve your mad photographic skillz. Fun, eh?

Today’s post is all about light: how to see it, how to use it, and why I think it’s the single most important consideration in any picture. Go on, take a read and let me know what you think!

canadianfamily.ca

Second, I’m excited because Canadian Family has provided FIVE subscriptions for me to give away to all of you. How awesome is that? I waffled for a while on whether to give away one each day or all five at the end of the week. I think one each day will be more fun, and a little bit more fair to everyone.

If you would like to be entered in today’s draw for a subscription to Canadian Family magazine, leave me a comment on this post. I’d really appreciate it if you could include a suggestion, topic idea, tip or trick that you think I should share. Is there something you’d like to know about taking better pictures? Got a secret worth sharing? I’d love to include it in the upcoming posts!

Here’s the fine print:

  1. Today’s giveaway is for one one-year subscription to Canadian Family magazine.
  2. To enter, leave a comment on this post before noon EDT on Tuesday July 13.
  3. Winners will be chosen using the random number generator at random.org from eligible entries on Tuesday 13 July 2010.
  4. You must leave a valid e-mail address and allow me to share your contact information with Canadian Family magazine to arrange for the subscription delivery.
  5. The winner will be contacted via e-mail and posted here.

Thanks to Canadian Family for the guest blogging opportunity and the fun giveaway. Don’t forget to check back each day this week — there are four more subscriptions to give away after today!

Calypso water park sneak peek and giveaway!!

Are you ready? Less than 50 days remain until Ottawa’s hottest summer ticket opens: the Calypso Water Park east of Ottawa near Limoges. We’ve been waiting (im)patiently for more than two years for this park to open — did you know it will be Canada’s largest water park? And on a warm day late in April, I got a special sneak peek of the park to share with you!

436:1000 Calypso tour - Pirate's Aquaplay TtV

I was excited when I heard a new water park was coming, but honestly? I had no idea it would be this awesome. It’s not just a couple of waterslides — it’s really a giant water theme park, with more than 35 waterslides, separate toddler and kiddie play areas, Canada’s largest wave pool, a whole bunch of places to eat — it’s truly amazing.

From a recent Citizen article:

When the park opens, visitors will find 80-foot long extreme-style waterslides, a half-kilometre jungle river winding past a 52,000-square-foot wave pool, a beach, restaurants, shops, splash pads and pools for toddlers, and enough picnic tables and green space for 12,000 visitors a day. Calypso’s millions of litres of water will be kept at a constant 27 C and filtered every 90 minutes — every 30 minutes in toddler areas.

Calypso is located to the east of the city right off the 417, in the town of Limoges. It was a little less than an hour’s drive from Barrhaven. This is the front entrance, just getting its last touches of paint before the grand opening in six weeks.

Calypso tour - front gate

The park is enormous. The parking lot alone has capacity for 3,000 cars, and if I remember correctly, the park itself has a capacity for something like 15,000 people. You enter through a lovely little “main street” type area with a few different types of restaurants (from a cafeteria to an ice cream shop to a more formal sit-down dinner kind of place) and a souvenir shop. The water attractions are arrayed in well-spaced clusters around the grounds, with vast amounts of green space and picnic tables in between.

Moving clockwise through the park, the first cluster of slides is the Zoomerang, the Black Hole and Turbulence. “Thrilling rides with steep chutes, 360 degree curves in total darkness!” promises the park flyer.

Calypso tour - Zoomerang, Black Hole and Turbulence

Next is this giant water playground, the Pirate’s Aquaplay. It has tamer slides for smaller riders, and fun things like water cannons. The giant bucket at the top fills and dumps every few minutes. Perfect for the 5 to 10 year old crowd, I’d say.

Calypso tour - Pirate's Aquaplay

And for the littlest park visitors, there is a toddler park called the Zoo Lagoon.

Calypso tour - Zoo Lagoon

Calypso tour - Zoo Lagoon TtV

This will give you an idea of the scope of the park. I’ve just stepped away from the Zoo Lagoon, and turned my camera to the next cluster of slides. You can see the steep drop of the Fast Track on the left, the Boomerango and the White Water Extreme in the far middle, the Jungle Run river-raft ride in the foreground and the Turbo Lab at the far right. Behind me is the Pirate Aquaplay area for the kiddies, and the super-giant Calypso Palace wave pool is beside the Turbo Lab, with the entrance and "main street" bistro and restaurant area off camera to my right.

Calypso tour - Jungle Run

It’s HUGE!!!

I’m sure there is a perfectly good reason they’ve named this cluster of slides the Fast Track, Adrenaline and Vertigo. Not for the faint of heart! I think they should have called that skinny one with the near-freefall vertical drop “the Wedgie”. Yikes!

Calypso tour - The Fast Track, Adrenaline and Vertigo

This one of the Boomerango and the White Water Extreme is a shade out of focus (sorry about that!) but I wanted to show you what looks like a wicked-fun ending to the slide. You come flying out of the yellow Boomerango slide and it flings you up the blue and yellow striped wall until gravity yanks you back down again. Wheeeeeee!

Calypso tour - Boomerango

And yes, that’s a motorized lift, but only for the rafts. Your quads will get a workout when you visit the Calypso water park with all those stairs to climb!!

I didn’t get a good picture of the giant Calypso Palace wave pool, but it’s the size of three NHL rinks. There’s nothing rinky-dink about this park! Apparently it will be Canada’s largest wave pool (appropriate, considering this will be Canada’s largest water park!) and will have five different types of waves. And it’s good for all ages, as the depth starts at nothing and slopes gradually down.

I was impressed by every single facet of this park. From small details to big thrills, they’ve got a lot to offer. There’s a really neat biometric payment system described in the Citizen article:

One innovation […] will allow visitors to make purchases at restaurants or other facilities without having to carry money or cards. All they need is their fingerprint. If they choose, a person can put funds into an account at the park, either with cash, credit card, or debit card, and then have a fingerprint recorded electronically. Then, all that is needed to make any type of purchase in the park is to have the fingerprint scanned again to access the account.

Isn’t that brilliant? So you don’t have to carry your purse or wallet around with you or have someone watching it at all times. Hmmm, wonder if they could do that with my camera equipment?! And, you can bring your own picnic basket and blankets into the park, as long as you don’t bring any glass containers. I love that!

So the sneak peek was a lot of fun for me — thank you to the media relations director at Calypso for making me feel like a respectable journalist. And guess what? I’ve got two free day passes to give away to you! I was going to give them away as a pair, but I think I’ll split them up to spread the love around. (Actually, I was thinking of making you take me if you’re the winner! Am I allowed to enter my own draw?!)

Edited to add: sorry, the draw has ended, but if you’re looking for more ideas on great places to visit and things to do in Ottawa, check my “Ottawa Family Fun” archives! Or, you can read about our first visit to Calypso water park the very week it opened — so much fun!!

And if you’re wondering what’s up with the pictures with the black frame and the distortion — that’s “through the viewfinder” photography. The images are taken with my digital SLR camera, but through the viewfinder (ttv) of a 50-year-old Kodak Duaflex camera. Interested in knowing more? Check out this TtV tutorial!

A Magical Giveaway!

It’s not too often that I get dance-around-the-house excited by blog pitches, but this one did it for me!

This week, I got an e-mail from the National Arts Centre (NAC) offering me two tickets to a special bloggers-night-out at a performance of Mysterioso: Music and Magic, a part of the CTV Pops series. Here’s the NAC’s description of the show:

Described by Johnny Carson, as “one of the classiest magic acts you’re going to see in a long time! The best I’ve seen!”, Joseph Gabriel has performed on virtually every major television variety show; for ten consecutive years in Las Vegas, and in an unprecedented 18 month Broadway run. His masterful sleight-of-hand and spectacular illusions will be in perfect harmony with our Pops Maestro Jack Everly leading the NAC Orchestra in magical orchestral gems guaranteed to leave you enchanted.

Here’s Jack Everly describing the event:

Doesn’t that sound like a wicked-fun night out? (A night out? Oh my, I simply can’t remember the last time Beloved and I had a night out. And you know what? Next Thursday, the night of the show, is the 15th anniversary of the night we met. Kismet or what?)

Even more fun, the NAC is offering special media access for photographs at the beginning of the show, and computers and wifi for tweeting before and after the show and during intermission. I love the NAC, and miss the days when we used to go there regularly. I’ve seen some fantastic shows there, from the Canadian Brass to Steven Wright to Holly Cole.

And of course, everything is more delightful when I can share it with my bloggy buddies. That’s right, I have a pair of tickets to give away to one lucky reader. Yay!

Here’s the details:

  • The tickets are for the 8 pm show on Thursday March 18. Please don’t enter if you’re not sure you can attend!
  • To enter, leave a comment on this post telling me something magical — I’ll leave that to your interpretation!
  • You must leave a valid e-mail address, so I can contact you.
  • I’ll use the random number generator to choose a winner on Monday March 15 around noon.
  • The winner will pick up the tickets directly from the NAC box office.

Music! Magic!! A chance to wear grown-up shoes and lipstick! Squeeee!!!

(And, good luck!)

A bloggy question of ethics

The other day, I received an e-mail pitch about a recent kids’ movie that I had thought about taking the boys to over Christmas. Now it’s coming out on DVD, and a PR firm working for the studio contacted me with what was very obviously a mass mailing.

Usually, I just delete these, but I’d been interested in the movie initially so I e-mailed back and asked if I could have one or more copies to give away on the blog. I got a prompt response saying that there were no promo copies for giveaways, but did I want a review copy?

I waffled, and in the end said no. I feel kind of odd taking products for review now when I can’t share them with at least some of you through a giveaway. I’m curious, though — what would you have done? Why I am differentiating between this and the dozens of other freebies I’ve received and blogged about through the years is beyond me — it just seemed somehow greedy of me to accept. Weird, eh?

Maybe it’s because I had read this blog post not too long before. It’s a rather tawdry story of some really indiscrete bloggers who were accepting products, reviewing them glowingly and talking about how much they or their family loved using the products, and then selling the items on a Facebook page, proclaiming that the items were “brand new” and “never used” often with tags still attached. I’d have no problem with a blogger donating or giving away or even selling a review product they’d received and not used, but to be duplicitous enough to lie about using the product and then turn around and sell it? No wonder mom bloggers get a bad name!!

On the other side of the spectrum, I didn’t have to waffle at all when I recently deleted a glowing offer to become a “brand ambassador” for a popular daytime soap and another daytime talk show. According to the pitch:

Brand Ambassadors will:

* Get the inside scoop on show developments and segments
* Have direct access to the Daytime Team to share feedback on XXX
* Be asked to use their influential platforms to help spread a buzz
* Receive special perks and goodies. We just have to keep these specifics under wraps until the Brand Ambassador Team is selected!

Excuse me while I roll my eyeballs around in my head for a while. Maybe it’s because I’m not a soap opera kind of girl that I’m cynical about this. Heck, if Jeff Probst asked me to be a Survivor Brand Ambassador, I’d fall all over myself saying yes. Then again, if Jeff Probst asked me to play naked in traffic during the rush hour in January, I’d do that too. We seem to be off on a bit of a tangent here… where were we?

Ah yes, I was about to ask you your thoughts on all of this. I try hard to strike a balance between great freebies for you guys and not spamming you with consumer stuff. While I’d happily accept a free Nikon D90 for the pleasure of sharing the pix with you (hello Nikon, are you listening?) the idea of taking little things like DVDs or free breakfast cereal just seems kind of cheap to me — and yet, the line in the sand is entirely arbitrary.

If I had a few extra minutes today, I’d go back and parse this meandering ramble into a much more concise post, but this is as good as it’s going to get. What say ye on the subject of bloggy freebies? Would you or do you accept any and all offers? Do you ‘get’ my distinction or do you think I’m splitting hairs? I’m always interested in your opinions!
