MP3 suggestions?

I got an MP3 player for Mother’s Day. As in, six months ago. Beloved loaded it up with half a dozen or so of my favourite songs that we had lying about, and since then I have done nothing with it. You’d think somebody who spends more than half her life perched on a keyboard might find some time to load the damn thing up with some music, but not so far.

‘And why not?’ you might justifiably ask.

There’s too much music.

I’m paralyzed by indecision. Because I want to have great music on my MP3 player, but I haven’t had the cognitive fortitude to think about what I want that music to be, I have instead left it to languish. What a waste!

So this bring us, my bloggy friends, to the Great Music Survey of Tuesday. Fill in the blanks and tell me your favourite songs in each category, and help me with those “AHA!” moments. Remind me about what great songs are out there.

1. What three albums (okay, CDs) would you take on a road trip, if the music was the only companionship you had?

2. You are in the worst. mood. ever. Name three songs that would cheer you up.

3. Your in-laws just called. They are in town unexpectedly and want to drop by for coffee in an hour. The house looks like the preschool maurading hoardes have been through on a crusade. Which three albums have enough energy to pump you up for the task?

4. Name three songs you loved from high school.

5. Name three songs that make you think of your pre-high school childhood.

6. The kids are in bed. Your significant other is elsewhere. You have a (bottle of red wine/pot of tea/case of beer), a great book and the evening to yourself. What music is playing in the background?

7. Name one new (2005) song, CD or band that you’ve ‘discovered’.

8. If you could be the manager for any band, group or artist, whom would you choose?

9. I’m aiming to make some sheet music tonight. What should be on the stereo?

10. If I only load one song onto my MP3 player, what song should that be?

I’ve made the quantity for most questions ‘three’ simply because I can never narrow my choices down to just one. Feel free to list as many or few as floats your boat. Also feel free to make random suggestions that don’t fit into the categories.

Oh, and while you’re pondering, here’s a not-so-subtle reminder that today is the penultimate day for voting on the Canadian Blog Awards. Did I mention that I do love you all so?

1. Any one of each: John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, U2. I have compilations from all three and that usually does the trick, but all three are always with me on a road trip.
2. “Jack and Diane, Pink Houses, Minutes to Memories” all by John Mellencamp. Works like a charm for me.
3. Madonna – Ray of Light, Dance Mix ’92, Ricky Martin (the one with Vida Loca on it).
4. “Boys of Summer”, “Jack and Diane”, “Cuts Like a Knife”.
5. “867-5309”, “Another Brick in the Wall”, “Freak out”
6. Tchiakovsky or Bach.
7. “Arcade Fire”
8. Ashlee Simpson, she needs a new Manager, and I would like to believe I could whip her into shape šŸ˜‰
9. Classical
10. “Summertime”

Wow! This is a tall order. Admittedly, now that I play MP3s, I don’t do albums anymore, but instead just buy singles. It’s a beautiful thing.
1. Transpotting and Garden State soundtracks.
2. Dandy Worhals – Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia…Green Day, Beck, Foo Fighters.
3. Then I go to The Killers (either Hot Fuss or Mr. Brightside)
4. How ’bout bands: The Cure, Ten Thousand Maniacs, REM
5. Prince, Madonna, Pet Shop Boys
6. Anything by Coldplay
8. The Killers – God, I just love ’em.
Sorry…I don’t have time to write more. Again, I mostly buy individual songs that I like. I can be really addictive. So, just surf around. I love IMixes. They can give you a lot of great ideas.

WOW! Most excellent suggestions from everyone! (Click over to suze’s blog and be sure to read her choices and rationalization, too – then click over to Nat’s blog from there and read hers, too. Woo hoo, I made a meme! My first – I’m so proud!)
Dean Dad – got any suggestions for where to find good podcasts?
You guys have some pretty diverse musical tastes! Lots of new ideas, thanks. I had every intention of answering my own questions, but I keep running out of time… I’ll get around to it eventually!
Batman, I still have your original note about finding music online stashed away. Maybe now I’ll actually use it!

Cyndi Lauper stuff.
I also absolutely love ‘Your Body Is A Wonderland’ by John Mayer!

1. Bridget Jones, Edge of Reason soundtrack; any 80’s compilation; Blue Rodeu Five Days in July
2. Tainted Love, Soft Cell; the Ally McBeal song by Barry White (remember the dancing in the co-ded can?);
3. Phantom of The Opera, Andrew Lloyd Weber production; Great Big Sea, Play; again, the 80’s
4. OMG the 80’s and you are only giving me three? Tainted Love, Soft Cell; Freeze Frame &/or Centerfold, J. Geils; Come on Eileen; Stairway to Heaven; Michael Jackson, Thriller (yes the entire album); Sussudio & Can’t Hurry Love, Phil Collins – No Jacket required (again, yes the entire album) OK I cheated…there are just way too many.
5. Bohemian Rhapsody (LOVE that one); The Grease Soundtrack; Satyin’ Alive, Bee Gees.
6. Harry Connick Jr; Enya; maybe Frank Sinatra; instrumentals – piano only.
7. The Wiggles? Or, I’ll say the Black Eyed Peas (apologies)
8. Not interested in that job.
9. Marvin Gaye. LMAO!!!
10. Skinnamarink. But I may have to go back to Bohemian Rhapsody cause you get a wee bit of everything, fast, slow, ballad, rock…
OK I got a bit silly…sorry. I am not much of a music connaisseur in any way, shape or form. And no where was I able to answer the BNL…yet I adore them and have all of their CD’s.

3 albums/CDs for a road trip:
– Jill Scott’s “Experience”
– Nancy King (any CD, really, but “Potato Radio” is great)
– Hipnosis’ “Carrousel”
3 “cheer up” songs:
– Sympathique, by Pink Martini
– Anything by ABBA
– I’m Gonna Be (550 Miles), by The Proclaimers
3 “energy” albums:
– Anything by The Police
– Ozzy Osbourne’s “No More Tears”
– Missy Elliott’s “Miss E…So Addictive”
3 songs I loved from high school:
– I Like Big Butts (Sir Mix-a-Lot)
– Jump Around (House of Pain)
– Nothing Compares 2 U (Sinead O’Connor)
3 songs I loved from pre-high school childhood:
– Rasputin (Boney M)
– La Isla Bonita (Madonna)
– I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2)
Quiet evening music:
Jazz. Sometimes classical.
“New to me”:
Lizz Wright’s CD “Dreaming Wide Awake” which then led me to her 2003 release “Salt.” EXCELLENT vocalist.
Who would you manage?:
My friend Sophia Perlman. She’s just incredible and I’d want to help her any way I could.
What to use for sheet music:
Sheet music….awwww yeeaaaahh. Sorry, got distracted. Uhhh…That would be Barry White for $500, Alex.
Only one song?
This question is totally unfair. How can you choose just one?! There are already so many things I love that I didn’t mention here…Ok, I guess I’d pick “He Loves Me (Lyzel in Eb)” from the Jill Scott Experience CD (this is the live version – amazing).
Dang, this was hard, Dani! šŸ™‚

16 Danigirl December 1, 2005 at 3:46 pm

Holy crap, people! You’ve got some excellent musical tastes. Some of the suggestions I’ll be taking to heart, in no particular order: BNL, Great Big Sea, Rush, ABBA, the Proclaimers, REM, U2, Madonna (love the Immaculata Collection), Green Day (“Time of your Life” is one of my all-time faves), Peter Gabriel, the Killers, Pearl Jam, Indigo Girls, Frank Sinatra, the Beatles…
Nobody mentioned The Tragically Hip? I asked for Hipponymous for Christmas. Best album ever = Up To Here.

17 Kristina December 2, 2005 at 6:02 am

Ha…just noticed I put “550 miles” for the Proclaimers. What was THAT.
I love Peter Gabriel too, just couldn’t fit everything in there. Also love Patricia Barber, Ani DiFranco, Jane Siberry…arg, and so many more. Tragically Hip is great, too.
Oo, yeah really…I see how this was so hard. How do you choose?!
