Comfort food

To me, junk food is comfort food. If I’m in a pissy mood, or particularly stressed, junk food makes me feel better. I’m particular, though. I’m not too fond of pies or pastries, not a chocolate kind of girl, not even a big fan of ice cream.

That’s why when I saw an article – front page and above the fold, no less – in yesterday’s Citizen that said that eating a small sugary snack actually reduces the stress hormones in your system, I thought they were talking directly to me.

The article mentions two snacks in particular – a Tim Horton’s doughnut, and a can of Coke Classic. Both have about 200 calories, just the right amount of sugar to combat those nasty stress hormones. (The article even confirms what I have long suspected, that artificial sweetners just don’t make the cut. It has to be real sugar.)

It’s as if they were reading my mind… in my world of junk food as anti-depressant, a Timmy’s chocolate glazed or an indulgently fizzy cold Coke would be two of my top three choices. The third, for what it’s worth, is a jumbo sized bag of Lay’s ruffled barbeque potato chips.

(Digression: it has been five, maybe six months since I’ve quit Weight Watchers, and if you google “Tim Horton WW points”, blog continues to be the number one search return. This is my legacy for the Internet.)

It’s been a rough couple of weeks, and I have to admit, I’ve indulged in each of my top three comfort food faves more than once recently. The good news is, at least they’re all under $2.00 a piece. It might not be great for my waistline, but at least I’m not blowing the kids’ inheritance.

What say ye, oh wise bloggy friends? What’s the balm for your soul on a bad day? Vintage red wine? Mashed potatoes and gravy? Fancy truffles that cost $8 each? Beer by the litre?

Sorry, you’ll have to type a little louder, these bbq chips are making quite the racket…

  1. I am not a can of coke person but the donut and the chips (not bar-b-que) are tops for me. Also include licorice allsorts and gummy worms. Oh, and those foamy hamburger things … hmmm … got to run to the Bulk Barn now…

  2. For me, it is all CHIPS and diet coke for me. Gimme the salty treats. With &/or without dip. Doritos. S&V. BBQ. Any flavour actually! Party Mix. Pretzels. Salsa/sourcream dip(s). Don’t forget the popcorn!! Popcorn! Popcorn! However, I have polished off at least 642 mini chocolate bars since Halloween and am not complaining. I have been a lttle less stressed though…hmmmm????

  3. What gives me that Awwww i’m destressing feeling is a Tim Horton’s French Vanilla Cappucino. Well While driving and listening to Nathan Say I don’t wanna go home.
Other wise It’s a coke or a glass of red wine and a bag of Chips – Salt and Vingear please.
What am I saying…ALL FOOD is COMFORT TO ME.
The Good the bad and the ugly!
    LOL

  4. I read this as soon as I’d finished off about 20 donut holes (or maybe there were more). Oink.
Oh by the way, Dani, one more thing . .
    CHOKE A CHICKEN!!

  5. Chocolate of any persuasion does the trick for me. I’m not fussy — it doesn’t have to be fancy-schmancy chocolate; M&Ms will do just fine.

  6. My balm for a bad day is definately alcohol, either a tasty beer or glass of red wine (whatever is handy). Next, my vice is definately salt. So, if I can curl up with a bottle of wine and a bag of pretzels. I’m a happy camper.

  7. i’m definately a chocolate girl.
although jujubes will do in a pinch.
or pretty much any candy really for that matter.
    mmmmm…sugar…..

  8. Am I weird for wanting a big bowl of pasta with butter and parmesan?
And Dani, are you hinting for the Winter Holiday of Your Choice Blogger Extravaganza? Be careful of what you wish for!

  9. I’ve discovered Sour JuJubes….they are truly ingenious, and always fresh from our local dealer (er, grocery store). No kidding, these things are like crack.
Milk chocolate….oooo, and Starbucks Peppermint Mocha with lots of whipped cream and extra sprinkles (because it’s all about the holiday sprinkles).
    Salty snacks, not so much.

  10. chocolate or other sweet treat. Has to be decent chocolate, though–you probably have no idea how bad American chocolate gets–you happy Canadians who can eat proper candy any time you wish (smarties, crunchie, flake, etc..).
Ice cream is a good one, too.

  11. Cotes Du Rhone and Salt and Vinegar chips. But, since I try not to drink as much as I did ten years ago, now that I am responsible adult. I go for hard candy. When I am stressed nothing (for me) beats crunching on pure sugar 🙂

  12. OK – I am totally bizzare in that the sweets don’t have any pull at all. The top two have to be 1)a boiled hot dog in one of those white bread fluffy buns that is twice the size of the dog itself and lots of ketchup….bbq dog is ok too, but it has to be a totally processed hot dog, not some good for ya meat based one. 2) PBJ on white bread…so much filling it slides out the sides and you have to lick it off the crust…crusts are OK.
Not much sugary sweet, but awesome comfort food….
