N<\/span>ow that the boys have iPods, our family iTunes account has become very, um, diverse in its musical tastes. Let’s just say that the Genius recommendations that used to kick out a lot of college alternative stuff are now so skewed toward Minecraft parody songs as to be unusable.<\/p>\n

I have to admit, though, that the boys have brought a needed dose of modernity to the 80s-entrenched playlists that Beloved and I have enjoyed for years. Just a few years ago, I could barely recognize a song or two from the annual best-of-summer lists, and now we’re bopping along to Daft Punk and Macklemore (I totally had to google the band names – but I know all the lyrics by heart! in fact, the boys have parody-ized Get Lucky and I find myself singing along about Mexican Monkeys – but that may in fact be a good alternative to them singing the actual lyrics to that one. But I digress…)<\/p>\n

Here’s the playlist I pulled together from our family iTunes account for Summer 2013. Can you guess which song comes from which generation? <\/p>\n

\nParty Rock Anthem<\/strong> – LMFAO
\nWhistle <\/strong>– Flo-rida
\nI wanna be sedated<\/strong> – Ramones
\nIt’s the end of the world as we know it<\/strong> – REM

It tickles me to see the 15-year gaping hole that comprises the late 1990s to 2010 or so. It’s missing some Great Big Sea and Tragically Hip, and I had originally included Queen’s Fat Bottomed Girls but it got deleted somehow. But it does make for some fun road trip music that keeps the whole family singing along.<\/p>\n
