{"id":245,"date":"2005-10-06T17:20:00","date_gmt":"2005-10-06T17:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danigirl.ca\/blog\/?p=245"},"modified":"2005-10-06T17:20:00","modified_gmt":"2005-10-06T17:20:00","slug":"the-church-stumbles-out-of-and-back-into-the-middle-ages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/danigirl.ca\/blog\/2005\/10\/06\/the-church-stumbles-out-of-and-back-into-the-middle-ages\/","title":{"rendered":"The Church stumbles out of &#8211; and back into &#8211; the Middle Ages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I&#8217;ve mentioned <a href=\"http:\/\/momm-eh.blogspot.com\/2005\/09\/convenience-versus-conscience-baptism.html\">recently<\/a>, I&#8217;m struggling with matters of faith and the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n<p>I was greatly fortified recently to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/article\/0,,13509-1811332,00.html\">read <\/a>that the Church has officially stated that the Bible should not be interpreted literally. (Are you listening, my <a href=\"http:\/\/momm-eh.blogspot.com\/2005\/08\/just-doin-my-part.html\">creationist <\/a>friends? Genesis is <em>just a nice story<\/em>, not an accurate account of historic events.) Wow, I thought, who knew? The Church may be modernizing its thinking after all.<\/p>\n<p>Then I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctv.ca\/servlet\/ArticleNews\/story\/CTVNews\/20050930\/vaticansynod_samesexeucharist_20050930\/20050930?hub=CTVNewsAt11\">read <\/a>today that the Church is considering to refuse communion to state leaders of countries who condone abortion or gay rights &#8211; like Canadian prime minister Paul Martin. Now, I&#8217;m far from being a Paul Martin supporter (although I do believe he&#8217;s better <a href=\"http:\/\/www.conservative.ca\/\">than <\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ndp.ca\/\">the <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blocquebecois.org\/fr\/default.asp\"> alternative<\/a>), but this to me is an outrageous act of blackmail on the part of the Church. No government leader should be religiously censured for the laws of their country.<\/p>\n<p>Martin&#8217;s response? &#8220;I believe in the Charter of Rights, and I do not believe that the prime minister of the country can cherry pick those rights.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bravo.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I&#8217;ve mentioned recently, I&#8217;m struggling with matters of faith and the Catholic Church.
