We&#8217;re so lucky to live in a city with walking trails, waterways, parks and other inexpensive or free things to do with kids, but there are also plenty of things to do on a rainy day.  Some of these things are full-day adventures, but most will occupy at least a couple of hours.  I started with a list of 15 things, then aimed for 25, and finally ended up with FORTY!!  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Capital ideas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Diesel dogs (street vendor hot dogs) under <a href=\"http:\/\/arthistory.about.com\/b\/2005\/05\/26\/louise-bourgeois-spider-sits-down-beside-national-gallery-of-canada.htm\">Maman the Spider<\/a> makes for a memorable if not nutritionally sound lunch<\/p>\n<p>Watch the ceremonial parade and changing of the guard on Parliament Hill every morning at 10:00<\/p>\n<p>Take a tour of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parl.gc.ca\/information\/visitors\/planning-e.asp\">Parliament Buildings<\/a> and check out the view from the Peace Tower<\/p>\n<p>Explore the grounds of Parliament Hill, from the statue of Sir Gallahad to the colony of feral cats<\/p>\n<p>Peruse history in the collections at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectionscanada.ca\/\">Library and Archives Canada<\/a><\/p>\n<p>See the horses at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca\/mr-ce\/centre-eng.htm#Rockcliffe\">RCMP stables and musical ride centre<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Visit the Bank of Canada&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.currencymuseum.ca\/\">Currency Museum <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tour the gardens at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gg.ca\/\">Rideau Hall<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Admission to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.national.gallery.ca\/\">National Gallery<\/a> is free on Thursday nights<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.ca\/\">Canadian Museum of Nature<\/a> also free on Thursday nights.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilization.ca\/\">Canadian Museum of Civilization<\/a>, including the absolutely stellar Children&#8217;s Museum, is free on Thursday nights after 4 pm.<\/p>\n<p>Borrow a free museum pass through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblioottawalibrary.ca\/explore\/about\/partners_e.html\">Ottawa Public Library&#8217;s Museum privilege program<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>See a bit of local history at the always free-of-charge <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nepeanmuseum.on.ca\/about.htm\">Nepean Museum<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Admission to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agriculture.technomuses.ca\/\">Experimental Farm<\/a> animal barns is free in the winter months.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.watsonsmill.com\/Home.html\">Watson&#8217;s Mill<\/a> in Manotick is free every day, with milling demonstrations through the summer months. (They&#8217;re closed through a lot of the winter months &#8211; check for times before you go!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naturally lovely<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the west end, walk the boardwalk along the Rideau River wetlands in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rideauvalley.on.ca\/careas\/chapman\/\">Chapman Mills conservation area<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the east end, walk the boardwalk through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadascapital.gc.ca\/bins\/ncc_web_content_page.asp?cid=16297-16299-9735-9743&#038;lang=1\">Mer Bleu bog<\/a>, an &#8220;internationally significant wetland&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are some wonderful hiking trails in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadascapital.gc.ca\/bins\/ncc_web_content_page.asp?cid=16297-16299-9735-9736-39784&#038;lang=1&#038;bhcp=1\">Greenbelt<\/a>.  The Jack Pine Trail is about a 40 minute loop, plenty easy for little legs.<\/p>\n<p>For an easy walk with a stroller, wander the paved bike path from Hogs Back Falls to Vincent Massey park.  Take the high trail on the way back and visit the oft-missed stone patio overlooking the river, and bring some birdseed to hand-feed the chickadees and nuthatches <\/p>\n<p>Feed the ducks and geese on the Rideau River near Billings Bridge<\/p>\n<p>Take a wander around Rockcliffe Park and enjoy the gorgeous stone gazebo and the lookout onto the Ottawa River<\/p>\n<p>Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rideau_Falls\">Rideau Falls <\/a>and the gorgeous parkland around old city hall<\/p>\n<p>On Sundays in the summer, Colonel By Drive is closed to traffic and open for bikes, blades and strollers<\/p>\n<p><strong>Retail therapy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chapters has a great kids section, and most of them have a train table or other toys to play with while mom and dad browse<\/p>\n<p>Ross&#8217; Independent Grocer in Barrhaven has a free playzone where you can drop the kids while you shop<\/p>\n<p>Drop off the kids at Ikea&#8217;s ball pit and play centre for a free hour while you browse <\/p>\n<p><strong>Take me out to the park<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a terrific splash pad and playground off Longfields in Barrhaven.  We pack a picnic and could spend the whole day there.<\/p>\n<p>The playground at Brewer Park has always been awesome, but it&#8217;s just been retrofitted to be especially accessible for those with disabilities<\/p>\n<p>There are dozens of wading pools of various shapes and sizes tucked away in parks throughout the city.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ottawa.ca\/residents\/parks_recreation\/seasonal\/ss\/wading_pools\/info_en.html\">You can get a list of them here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Did you know the city offers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ottawa.ca\/residents\/parks_recreation\/seasonal\/ss\/wading_pools\/water_play_en.html\">free swimming lessons<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Take a Sunday morning browse at the Ottawa Farmers Market at Landsdowne Park, then stay a while and play at the lovely little park on Fifth just before the Driveway.<\/p>\n<p>Plan a day of sun at the beach at Britannia Beach.  Buy yourself some fries for lunch, but don&#8217;t feed the seagulls (they&#8217;re a leading cause of beach-closing e-coli.)<\/p>\n<p>Visit the recently-improved <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fallingbrook.com\/petrieisland\/\">Petrie Island<\/a> beach and nearby trails<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a great list of urban parks and a bit of a history lesson on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadascapital.gc.ca\/bins\/ncc_web_content_page.asp?cid=16300-20447-20593-24948&#038;lang=1\">NCC site<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Consider a playground tour.  New is interesting, especially to kids!<\/p>\n<p><strong>For a few dollars more<\/strong>  (not quite free, but mostly around $10 for the family)<\/p>\n<p>On a rainy day, consider an<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ottawa.ca\/residents\/parks_recreation\/facilities\/pools_en.html\"> indoor pool<\/a> &#8211; or maybe even ride the surf at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ottawa.ca\/residents\/parks_recreation\/facilities\/rec_centres\/klc\/index_en.html\">Kanata wave pool<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Doesn&#8217;t every preschool boy love trains? A round-trip on the O-Train is only an hour or so.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get out of town<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tour the Hershey Factory in Smiths Falls (it&#8217;s open until December 2008) and get your free sample<\/p>\n<p>Spend a day at Lac Phillip and spelunk the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadascapital.gc.ca\/bins\/ncc_web_content_page.asp?cid=16297-16299-10170-49685-49721-49726&#038;lang=1\">Lusk Caves <\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Enjoy an afternoon getaway to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadascapital.gc.ca\/bins\/ncc_web_content_page.asp?cid=16297-16299-10170-49685-49721-49723-49735&#038;lang=1 (\">Mackenzie King estate<\/a> at Kingsmere<br \/>\n(you&#8217;ll have to pay a per-vehicle fee less than $10 if you drive) <\/p>\n<p>Hike the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadascapital.gc.ca\/bins\/ncc_web_content_page.asp?cid=16297-16299-10170-49685-49721-59486&#038;lang=1\">Eardley Escarpment<\/a> in Gatineau Park, especially lovely in the fall (you&#8217;ll have to pay a per-vehicle fee less than $10 if you drive) <\/p>\n<p><strong>Edited to add:<\/strong> this post is quite a few years old, but still very popular.
