I&#8217;d just picked up a second-hand fish-eye lens and thought it would be a fun place to take it for a test drive. A fish-eye lens has an extremely short focal length, which gives it a very distinctive distortion, making things at the centre seem to bow inwards, especially if you are particularly close to them.<\/p>\n<p>Like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/postcardsfromthemothership\/16820003711\" title=\"Manotick School of Music's  grand piano by Danielle Donders, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7281\/16820003711_64a17b3131_z.jpg\" class=\"frame aligncenter\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" alt=\"Lessons on a grand piano\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The effect is more pronounced the closer you are to your subject, so Simon doesn&#8217;t look particularly distorted but the piano seems to warp around him:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/postcardsfromthemothership\/16634965919\" title=\"Manotick School of Music's  grand piano by Danielle Donders, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8659\/16634965919_d3e057b74c_z.jpg\" class=\"frame aligncenter\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" alt=\"Lessons on a grand piano\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/postcardsfromthemothership\/16821071745\" title=\"Manotick School of Music's grand piano by Danielle Donders, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8603\/16821071745_06dfd997e2_z.jpg\" class=\"frame aligncenter\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" alt=\"Lessons on a grand piano\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I pulled the fish-eye off to capture this quick portrait of Manotick School of Music director Lisa. She was showing us that you have to water high end pianos in a manner not dissimilar to how you water your natural Christmas trees. All the years I&#8217;ve had music in my life and I had no idea &#8211; then again, I haven&#8217;t spent a lot of time around grand pianos, either. Can&#8217;t wait to see what it does to a PEI beach landscape!
