I recommend “Cuore” by Rita Pavone because it reminds me of my high school years back in Italy. Rita Pavone is the same age as me and I always liked her.

I second the vote on Sufjan Stevens’ Chicago. It’s a lovely song. But here are two more suggestions for you:
Click, Click, Click, Click by Bishop Allen. Catchy and clever.
Let’s Hear it for the Boy by Deniece Williams. It always puts me in a better mood!

Here are two for the kids that won’t drive you crazy:
Coffee Song by Ralph’s World. (My favourite line: “I wanna latte, a cappucino, and tonight I think I’ll have a little vino.”)
Hockey Monkey by James Kochalka. It’s about hockey and monkeys. What’s not to love?

I absolutely love “You Belong to Me”, which is a very old song, but as it is sung by Jason Wade (on the Shrek soundtrack!), it is particularly beautiful.

Another great one from Shrek (yes, I like the soundtrack) is Rufus Wainwright singing Hallelujah, but I prefer k.d. lang’s version (from “hymns of the 49th parallel”– and hey, since it was originally written by Leonard Cohen, it’s nice to hear a Canadian interpretation.

One of my all-time favourites is True Companion by Marc Cohn. I never would have found it but I was doing a slide show for my brother’s wedding and someone on a bulletin board recommended it to me for background music. It makes me cry every time (but in a good way!).

I also love his song The Things We’ve Handed Down…one of the best songs out there to listen to during pregnancy!

Metric’s “Help, I’m Alive” is on high rotation at our house lately. Even my toddler knows this is my favourite song, and runs to get me when it plays on the radio.
